Tom Haimann Class of 1980 Posted: 2/19/2009
I can't let my sister Mary (Class '79) beat me any longer with her posting. Yes, I am alive. I've been married to Michelle (Shelly) since 1990. We have two daughters, Rebecca (1993)and Cassandra (1998) and 3- Golden Retrievers! We own a home in Hoffman Estates, IL. I work as an Accounting Manager at Walgreens Corporate in Deerfield for the last 10-years. I'm a graduate of DePaul University (10-years- I went the long route). I have many fond memories of my St Chris years. Still get back as Mom and Dad live in Crestwood. Its always fun to attend church at St Chris. Shelly and I got married at St Chris and it has always held many great memories for me. Memories of Fr. Marshall and his help with our family, the teen center and my first kiss (yes) outside the center, memories of roller skating on Fridays in the gym and fond memories of teachers and sisters of the past (like Sr. Bertha Marie, Sr Charlotte and and who can forget Sr. Lois, well maybe we shouldn't go there!!) Being picked on as a kid, it didn't seem like I had good memories of school, but in looking back, they were fun days filled with many positive, exciting moments!

Dyan ( Morrissey) Henschel Class of 1980 Posted: 3/24/2008

I been married almost 3 years to another St. Chris Alumni Edward Henschel Class of 75 We just had a beautiful baby boy named Michael James. That makes number 7 for our family.

I think my favorite memory would be when we made a living tree banner with Sister Charlotte that we all took turns sewing and when it was finished it was displayed in the church for all to see. I also remember going to the teen center That was a blast too.

Margie (McHugh) Larmon Class of 1981 Posted: 9/30/2006
I have been married for four years. My husband Sean and I just had our first child, a little girl, Megan. I work for a small commercial real estate developer downtown. I am still very active in the parish. I want to know where is everyone from the class of "81"? Where is everyone form the "80's" and "90's" for that matter. Let the Alumni Assoc. hear from you!!

Laura (Bostrom) Schultz Class of 1977 Posted: 2/20/2010

I have so many fond memories of St. Christopher's (one of the many benefit of having livid across the street for so many years - FIESTA and being able to go home for lunch!). I remember in 2nd grade playing Mary in the Christmas pagent with Phil Jacobs as Joseph, singing "There's a hole in the bucket, dear 'Georgie'" with Bob Peters for Father Brown's jubilee, and helping St. MaryAnn decorate the old convent attic for a Holloween party! I actually went back to the Fiesta this past summer and SO much fun seeing everyone that I plan on doing it every year!

I currently live in Woodridge, IL with my husband Jerry (we'll be married 17 years in March). We have a daughter, Rebecca, who is a freshman at Downers Grove South H.S. I have two children from a previous marriage, my son Bob Meyer is 25 and lives in Midlothian working as a firefighter (my parents still live across the street and my older brother works for St. Christopher's!), my daughter Krystina Meyer will be 21 and is profoundly disabled, but we're lucky that she's still able to live at home with us - she is a source of pure joy and laughter! I work part-time as a medical assistant for a podiatric surgeon. My husband and my youngest daughter have both been diagnosed with Multiple Sclorosis (MS), Jerry for 32 yrs and Becca for 2 yrs. They are both inspirational! Jerry is working towards a Masters in Social work and Rebecca is my right-hand helper with her dad and sister while I'm not home! They say that God gives you what you can handle, and even though I question how much, I know that He has been preparing me for this my whole life! St. Chrisopher's and the many friends I've known there from the priests, nuns, choir director and members to all my fellow classmates - you've ALL prepared me.

It is with great sadness that I notfiy St. Christopher's that another alumni, Carrie Benedict, has passed away on February 19th, 2010. The following link will provide more information:

Carrie Benedict obituary

Please keep Carrie's family in your prayers, they grew up on Keeler Avenue across the street from the church and school, next door to me until approximately, 1976.

Jim Olson Class of 1978 Posted: 12/10/2009
Very cool this is here as i have great memories of grade school. I have 4 kids 2 from a previous marriage. Cassidy 15, Dayton 13, Sierra 9, Riley 5. I live in Lombard with my wife Kim. I have lived out in the western suburbs since college. I am the GM of the Gameworks in Schaumburg. I remember shooting spit balls in 7th grade, I remember Mr. Grimm's class I believe where everyone pretended to be one of the sweathogs. I remember setting up chairs for bingo very early in the morning. I am disappointed I missed our reunion...that would have been fun to go...I will be at the next one... I still see Dave Kelleher once in a while.

John Digenan Class of 1978 Posted: 6/5/2009

Cool to see what people are up to after all these years. Sorry to see about Barb's husband. I've lost track of most everyone over time with a couple exceptions. I still stay in close touch with Pez (Dan Leslie). Yes, I still call him Pez. Also, I see Dan Carroll every few years.

My wife, Mary, and I have two kids. Henry is just finishing his freshman year of high school and Julia is in 7th grade. I'm living in the Seattle area. I work for Microsoft and have been out here for eight years. It's a great place to live. I play soccer a few times a week and like to ride my motorcycle when it's not raining.

My brother (Tom) and sisters (Amy and Becky) are still in the Chicago area, as are my parents. I usually get back to Chicago a couple times a year.

Debbie (Dempsey) Skorupa Class of 1977 Posted: 9/4/2008

Wow! A few blasts from the past! Hi to all! I'm no longer married, but have two sons, David, a sophomore at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA and Eric a Junior in HS. I currently live in Leesburg, VA but have moved several times for work prior to my stint here. Was in NY and Dallas for a few years each after leaving the Chicago area. Still have quite a bit of family that resides in the area so I get home periodically. There is also a contingent of us out here on the east coast...Sheila in NJ, Cathy in PA, and Patty in NY, so we get some family visitors out our way too.

Mom and Dad still live across the street from church, so not much has changed there. They are grandparents to 25 grandkids at this point and going strong! Still in touch with Eileen Yucuis, Jane Connolly, Jeanne Peters, and Bob Peters. Some things never change!

My email is deb2boys@aol.com, so I welcome any info on all of my old friends! This website is a great idea!

I have worked at Griffith Laboratories for the past 29 years. I have been married to my beautiful wife, Monica, for the past 20 years. We do not have any children. My wife and I have lived in Matteson, Illinois, for the past 17 years. My parents, who lived in Midlothian for 49 years, where killed when their house exploded on July 4, 1998. That was a very difficult year for me. I always look forward to going to the St. Christopher Festival each year. It brings back happy memories of when I went to St. Christopher and when I went to the St. Christopher Festival with my friends.

Michael Gunkel Class of 1976 Posted: 7/12/2007

Well, so many memories so little space! I have been married for 10 years my wife's name is Janet and we have a little daughter Chloe who is 5 years old. We reside in Frankfort. I went to Lewis University and played baseball there. Hello Norman Corsi we could be neighbors? Mike Buck also lives in Frankfort class of (76)

Anyways a couple of things down memory lane being on the the basketball team was some fond memories #1 Matt Ohara scoring about 50 points I think in one game against St. Stans. #2 Banquets at Chuck Cavillini's #3 making a couple of half court shots in 6th grade one was at Bremen High School (Our floor was being redone) #4 All the games we played from 6th grade on up! The coaches Mr. Ryback (6th grade) coach we used to ride in the back of his pick-up truck to games! Mr. Collins, Mr. Moody and Mr. Moore some of the best coaches and men one could ever be around! (Didn't know that back when I was a little tot) but realize it now, they really dedicated themselves to coaching us kids! And of course the Converse All-Star canvas gym shoes with the red shoe laces! WOW those were the best shoes which cost about 6 or 7 dollars back then, red laces included! I still see Mr. Moody every now and then, I seen a couple of coaches at the 85th Anniversary dinner awhile back. Mr Hanlon and Mr. Moody. Also I ran into Mrs. Gleason. I went with Jimmy Mac class of (75) it was great to see so many people you haven't seen in years!

Sorry getting back to the memories! Of course rollerskating is on the list and teachers such as Sister Mary Jane, Mr. Augustine, Mr. Schuler, Ms. Nelson and Mrs. Wagner wow that was a list that's not hard to forget! Recess with Mrs. Franco pitching and Dan Reed hitting the ball as far as Dave Kingman used to hit em! Going on field trips like Galena with Pugsly buying all of those doughnuts at Delite Donuts I think that's the name! Well I can go on but maybe I'll see some of you at the Fiesta next Friday! E-mail if you would like gunks@sbcglobal.net

Greetings St. Chris, I have been married to my wife Debbie for what seems like 150 years (just kidding). We are high school sweethearts. I have 2 children Gino (12) and Kayla Rose (8). I still have most of my hair despite the grey in it, and can still fit in my jeans I wore in high school. In fact, I think they might be the ones I wore in high school. Not too flabby, but getting there. We reside in Frankfort after moving from Matteson 4 years ago. My kids attend St. Lawrence O'Toole in Matteson. My son's basketball team just played St. Chris at the school which prompted this message. I went to Oak Forest High School and then on to Columbia College in Chicago, where I briefly worked at WXRT radio. I now work for a sound company that provides audio re-enforcement for events such as Super Bowl half time show, NBA All Star Game, and the 2000 & 2004 Presidential debates. I have many fond memories of St Christopher that I didn't realize until today and will never forget the wiffle (?spelling) baseball bat Fr. Gale had on the wall behind his desk. Luckily he never used it on me, but from the looks of the bat, it had met many students. My door is always open to friends, so feel free to contact me.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all St. Chris Alum.

Does anyone know the where abouts of Betty (McNeely) Vaughn. She married Tom Vaughn, also another St. Chis Alum. The last address I had for them was in Michigan. We lost touch with each other a couple of years back and sure would like to talk to her again. Thanks.

Joe Landeck Class of 1961 Posted: 11/1/2009
Hey! Does anyone out there know if Miss Kelly is still around the area? She was my seventh grade teacher in 1959-1960. I always thought she was the best teacher I ever had and that she inspired me to become a teacher. I sure would like to see her and talk to her. It would be great if she could come to our 50 year reunion in 2011. If anyone knows of her whereabouts let me know. I'm really looking forward to the reunion. Back in May I visited the school. Great memories! I was told the enrollment is down to about 200. I was shocked. There were about 1,000 student when I graduated in 1961. Hope to here about Miss Kelly and from some of you 1961 grads. Joe Landeck.

Larry (Woestan) Woestman Class of 1963 Posted: 10/23/2009
I have alot of great memories of St Chris. Most of all the roller skating. I got up the nerve to ask my favorite girl to skate one night and we've been together for over 50 yrs. Her name is Nancy Ahlgrim and we've been married 39 yrs and have 2 children and 2 grandchildren with 1 on the way in May. Boy Scouts was another great part of my St Chris memories. With Roman Potempa,Bob Bell and all the other guys. Graduated in 63, then went to Bremen for 4 long years. After working for Jewel Tea for a year Uncle Sam came a knocking. Joined the US Air Force to stay out of Viet Nam. I spent 18 months in Tiawan. I got involved with the Far East council of the Boy Scouts of America and met some great people, both military and missionary families. That helped me pass the time. In 1970 I got stationed at Hickham AFB in Hawaii in the Honor Guard. Again got involved in Scouting and became a scoutmaster of the troop on Hickham. Nancy and I spent 2 wonderfull years there but had to leave in 1972 when my tour of duty was up. Went back to Jewel for 8 more years . Now I"m with Sears as a service tech repairing refrigators. Hopefully going to retire in 3 or so years. I read the news from John Smart and am wondering if it is the same John Smart I was in Scouts with. His dad was scoutmaster for a while. If you read this shoot me an e-mail. I'd love to hear from you. My email is pepcconn2@aol.com

John Carmen Class of 1961 Posted: 6/29/2009

My brother Mark (1968) Told me about this site so I thought I would take a look. I'm glad I did as it brought back some nice memories. After Brother Rice H.S. I graduated from U of I in Champaign and went trough Air Force pilot training. I flew F-4s in Vietnam and then flew F-15's in Phoenix till 1979. we settled in Indiana 65 miles from Chiocago. I flew for United Airlines out of Ohare until retirement in 2007. I was widowed in 1992 but have remarried since. 2 daughters a stepson and 3 grandchildren. I play quite a bit of golf and time with my family. I have a teachers grant program here in Indiana and enjoy spending time in the local schools. Hello to all my 1961 classmates.

Jim Stadter Class of 1961 Posted: 5/6/2009

Hello, Joe Landeck. It's been a long time. I have that 1961 team picture filed away somewhere, but it was good to see it posted here. The names of the players: Bob Mitchell 7, Jim O'Donnell 14, Jim Rehmeier (deceased) 12, Mike Mossuto (only 7th grader on the team) 8, Dan O'Connor 11, Bob Calder 3, Joe Landeck 5, Ed Benkowski 9, Mark Miotti 10, George Daker 4 and Jim Stadter 13. I believe the coach on the left was Mr. Cahill, the one in the middle with the hat on was Jim O'Donnell's father and our leader, on the right, Larry Kinsella. My favorite memories of that season: 1) home-made pizza at Landeck's house and 2) the weekend sleep-over party at Calder when the season was over.

Looking forward to a 50-year reunion for the Class of '61, I have started to round up contact information for the event. You can contact me by e-mail stadtman@pctcnet.net or look up my page on Facebook.

Joe Landeck Class of 1961 Posted: 5/5/2009
The reason my last two entries are pretty much the same is that after I submitted the first one I thought that I had some how messed it up and didn't do it correctly so I resubmitted a second version. I am a computer nerd. I'm hoping to get up to the Midlothian area in the next few weeks and visit St. Christopher school. Keep the memories coming.

Joe Landeck Class of 1961 Posted: 5/1/2009
Class of 1961: take a look at the basketball picture I recently sent in. I'll identify as many names I remember. Help me out. Jim Reymeyer # 1; Danny O,Conner #11; Bob (Moose) Calder #3; Joe Landeck #5; Mark Miotti #10; Jim Stadter #13; Head coach on right Larry Kinsella. We had a pretty good team losing only 2 or 3 games all year. I remember I fell and split my head open the Sunday morning of our first game and had to get some stitches and as a result I missed the first couple of games. Somewhere I have some cheerleader pictures. I'll have to find them and send them in. I think our school nickname was the Comets. Does that sound right? We used to sing our school song to the tune of The Mickey Mouse theme song: C-H-R---I-S-T----O-P-H-E-R St. Christopher etc. Hope to hear from some 1961 St. Chris grads.

Joe Landeck Class of 1961 Posted: 4/27/2009
Hey, 1961 grads: go to pictures and find the basketball team. I dug this out of my picture box and sent it in. I'll list the players as the best I remember. Help me out if I make any mistakes. Jim Reymeyer third from left back row; Danny O'Conner fifth from left back row; Bob (Moose) Calder third from right back row; Joe Landeck second from right back row; Mark Miotti front left; Head Coach Larry Kinsella third from right; Jim Stadter far right. We had a really decent team that year. I think we lost only 2 or 3 games. I remember I missed the first few games after falling down and splitting my head open on the Sunday morning of the first game. Father Gale used to treat us to pizzas(I imagine the parents chipped in to pay for it) once in awhile in the school cafeteria after we'd win a tournament or the weekend games. Then he would come into Sister Huberta's room on Monday morning and yell at us (and maybe throw us around a little bit too) to keep us from getting big heads. Oh, such fun! Any other 1961 basketball memories out there?

Joe Landeck Class of 1961 Posted: 3/29/2009

I just read Jeanne Placek's comments about Larry Cibulski. I never knew he wasn't Catholic. I forgot all about that southern drawl he had. I used to go over to Larry's house after school and play. He was really a nice boy!

I'm really looking forward to a 50 year (does that seem possible?) class reunion in a couple of years. I hope as many of us make it to that as possible. I retired from teaching seven years ago. Then I subbed for a few years but now I teach at Eastern Illinois University. It's a fun job; I teach future teachers how to teach elementary physed; that's what I taught the last 23 years of my career. Hope to hear from 1961 grads.

Jeanne (Placek) Diaraj Class of 1961 Posted: 3/17/2009
Joe Landeck mentioned Larry Cibulski...I never forgot that gentle boy from Mississippi. He wasn't Catholic; somehow he wound up in Catholic school. He would politely call the nuns "Ma'am", and when they corrected him, he politely corrected himself. Was he out on the train tracks proving misguided bravery to be accepted? What a price he paid.So sad.... Hm-m-m.....Anyhow, about me..just got on Social Security. Holy cow. The money sure helps; but the age is weird. I'm widowed now for 16 years. Am a musician. Am a traveling troubador of sorts...I sing and play accordion in retirement homes to a bunch of fun-loving raucous oldsters. I saw Mary Pavilon's and Barbara Keebler's names here, as well as Joe Landeck's. Such a long, long time it's been.....

I have many memories of St. Chris too. Most good and some not so good. I was there until just before graduation in 1969. My family moved to Tucson, AZ, and except for a few years in Colorado I have been there ever since. My Aunt, Mrs. Samet, taught at St. Chris too. I have been a teacher for the last 20 years. I went to the University of Arizona and am currently taking classes online for a master's degree in TESOL. I have a daughter who is 26. Would love to hear from former classmates. nbelle46@cox.net

Jim O'Donnell Class of 1961 Posted: 12/11/2008
I found this site by sheer accident and it brought back some memories. I attended from 7th through 8th grades and remeber both Mrs Kelly and singing choir and playing basketball. We did have a decent b-ball team, as I recall we started 2 and 2 and then won the rest of our games. I moved away after graduation and went to Notre Dame in Niles. Then 3 years with the Army in Southeast Asia. Then graduated from U of Dubuque in Iowa with BBA. Still working I am an executive in the nurse travel industry in California. I enjoyed being reminded of St. Chris'.

Michael Williams Class of 1969 Posted: 11/27/2008
Will never forget the first day I reported aboard the USS L Mendel Rivers (SSN 686) and Tony Sandoval was cooking in the galley. Small world! Also ran into a relative of Diane Lewandowski in the service. After 6 years in the Navy, worked for the government in a Naval shipyard. Joined the Air Force and served in country during Desert Storm. Retired from that in 1999. Now, I'm a Master Technician for Harley-Davidson down in Florida. Have twin boys age 15 and a daughter that's 13 going on 30.Found out about the assn while my wife and I rode our bikes up to the Midlothian area last summer. Found out last spring that my younger brother (Pat Kelleher) had been murdered in Chicago back in 1997 over a $20.00 debt. What a long , strange trip it's been.

My memories of St Chris are similar to that of most former students. Some of the teachers, nuns and priests included, acted in an un-Christ-like manner. I am not judging them, I only know what I witnessed. Others were very good.

I remember counting the number of hours until the school year ended! This usually began every Fall. After St Chris, I went to Bremen and then on to college. I managed to get 2 graduate degrees (chemistry and business) and I have been working as a chemist for the past 30 years.

Diane (Lewandowski) Durnik Class of 1969 Posted: 7/14/2008

I have many fond memories of St. Chris School. I remember the nuns in full habit, great recess games, and roller skating in the gym on Friday nights. Music we listened to were the Beatles, the Monkeys, and whoever sang "Moni Moni". Classes were large - up to 40, I think. I remember a certain fearful male lay teacher and his flying erasers, lysol spray during flu season, and face slaps. There was always a bit of apprehension on report card days when a priest would pass out report cards. I remember Father Bruno who used to call me "whitey" because of my white/blonde hair.

I went to Bremen High School and then on to NIU. After college I became a special education teacher and have been one for 30 years. I have been married for 27 years and have two children; a boy 19 and a girl 24.

I just had my 60th birthday and attended the 60th birthday of my friend and classmate Chuck Becker. I just want to wish all my classmates of 1962 a Happy 60th Birthday. I assume we will all be turning 60 this year, if we haven't already. My, has time has passed. I wish everyone good health and best wishes. I will be back to chat later.

I was reading Lorraine Geary Kluegel's reference to Father Gale taking the basketball team to the cafeteria after a game and ordering pizza for the team, parents annd families. That might have been our 8th grade team. We had a pretty good team winning qiite a few games and tournaments and Father Gale treated us all to pizza after one of the wins. That would have been in February or March of 1961. I think our coach was Larry Kinsella. I remember we only practiced one night a week, usually a Thursday. Now if kids are out for a sport they practice year round and they start at about 4 or 5 years old. We don't give kids time to just be kids anymore. We always had the most fun just getting a bunch of us guys together to have pick up games on our own with no adult supervision. Those were the "good old days." Hey 1961 grads, how about a reunion? Let's hear from you!

Lorraine (Geary) Kluegel Class of 1968 Posted: 2/7/2008

I didn't actually graduate from St Christopher's, only went through 4th grade. I was reading through the info already posted and really enjoying the memories. Does anyone remember Sister Bertha Marie? I had her for 3rd grade in the old annex, remember the annex!! Every day it rained she would say "nice weather for ducks".I remember going to Father Gales "Hootenany"(not sure of spelling). Loved going to the fiesta every year and having all our relatives come out and have the Chicken Dinner. I also have a vague memory of when one of the basketball teams did really well, and Father Gale(I think) took everyone back to the cafeteria and ordered pizza. I also loved the bazaar on St Pats day, we would get out of school for awhile. I remember skating in the gym. I really enjoyed school there and all the nuns. I also remember Father Gale would come into our classroom and hand out the report cards, I would be so scared that he would yell at me!!! And he did once, I did not get a very good grade in Conduct-do you remember getting grades in conduct-like talking too much in line on the way to somewhere.

Well after I left St Christopher's we moved to Minnesota and I graduated from another Catholic grade school. Did not marry until a little later in life. I have 2 great sons. One is currently a Freshman at the University of Minnesota and the other a Junior in High School. I married a man I meant on a blind date, and it has been a perfect match for 20 years. Looking forward to hearing from more of my classmates. I had 2 siblings who also attended St Chris's one graduated in 1961 and the other went through 7th grade and would have graduated in 1965.

Most of my memories of St. Chris are good. I loved the fiesta, hated the uniforms. (and those dreadful beannies). I still attend Mass on sundays. I love my church. To Betty McHugh-- I remember you. You in my 5th grade class with Mr. Seah. He was mean. I also remeber report card day. Can you imagine the kids today in this school! They'd never make it. I have two daughters that are 27 and 20 that I raised alone after the death of thier father. I have been employed at St. Francis Hospital for 30 years.

What good memories growing up. I usually don't respond to these things. My Dad, who is still alive and lives on Karlov across 147th from the school taught me Latin early and I remember serving my first public Mass when the 7&8th grade servers went to the ball game. The nuns always used to call me to serve at the convent when a visiting priest was in. We always tried to get to serve 6:30 or 7AM Mass during the week so we could stay home and play basketball while everyone else was in church. I went to the Franciscan seminary in Westmont for two and a half years - poor study habits. I ended up graduating from Joliet Catholic High School. My claim to fame there is that I graduated with "Rudy" of Notre Dame fame.

I have lived in Denver since coming back from Vietnam in 1970. I married late in life and we have one child, a special gift from God. Very smart, very tall and very pretty. She will be graduating next year from the IB program in Denver Public Schools. I wanted Catholic education, but they couldn't keep her challenged. My older sister Kath is a Servite nun, the ones that taught at Mother of Sorrows. She is in Italy, has been for the past 8 years. She initially went over to be the consigliore to the Mother General. When her term was up, they kept her there to run their pensione in Piazze Navonne. My sister Marie died when she was in 7th grade, in Sister Victoria's class. My sister Bernadette married a farmer, though not at the time and lives in Northwest Iowa, and is now an empty nester after 5 kids. My brother Tom takes care of my Dad. The next younger, Regina (Jean) lives in the city and has one child and the youngest Anne, lives in McHenry and has two of 5 still at home. I get home to see my Dad once in a while. What good times growing up. I tell my daughter about all the stuff and ALL the kids in the neighborhood all the time, and I don't think she believes me. Jerry grcka@msn.com

I just read Terry Kieffer's memories. Yes, Father Gale hated wine, but he,and the other priests, really loved their beer. Father Gale would always make a face after drinking the wine and tell us alter boys how awful it tasted. Then he would tell us to never drink that stuff. I had Miss Kelly in seventh grade (1959-1960) so I don't know when she went to work for the airlines. She was probably the best teacher I ever had; of course it was always great to have a lay teacher, they weren't as strict as the nuns. That's not to say that we got away with more, it's just that things were a little more relaxed. Let's get some more 1961 grads on this news page. It would sure be great to have a reunion sometime.

Terry Kieffer Class of 1961 Posted: 11/6/2007

I didn’t attend St. Christopher until the 5th Grade in 1957 when my family moved to Midlothian from Oak Lawn. We lived next door to the Goetzinger’s on 148th Street.

Like Joe Landeck, I too remember the day when Larry Cebulski was hit and killed by a train. It really left an impression on me as I think of him every time I take the train into the City. Similar to President Kennedy’s assassination and 911, I can still picture where I was at the time I heard that it had happened.

I was an altar boy at the old church and old convent chapel. Remember the “Knights of the Altar”. I still have my Page, Knight and Grand Knight pins. http://www.stjosephschurch.net/handbook.pdf. I also still remember that Fr. Gale always wanted as little wine as possible when it came time for the cruet mix. I think he was a beer man myself. Since I lived so close to the church the nuns allowed me to keep each set (Regular B/W, Red/Gold Fringe, Black/Black Fringe) of vestments at home so that I could be called to “serve” at a moments notice.

I had Miss Kelly in the 6th Grade. When my parents went in for a parent teacher conference one night she asked my dad if United Air Lines was hiring stewardesses. My dad, who worked for United, checked into it for her. At the end of the school year she left teaching and went on to become one.

Does anyone remember the “Hansel and Gretel” school play? Or Mrs. Fenwick’s class presentation of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”? John Carmen, John Fredette and I did a lot of work on the background scenery for her. We also turned the well constructed “gingerbread house” used in “Hansel and Gretel” into a log cabin. John Carmen MC’d the event, John Fredette played “Jim”, and I helped work the lights.

Anyone ever go fishing at “Shedd’s Pond” behind the school or at the pond next to Bachelor's Grove cemetery? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2NRtnCMg4c

Are you aware that Bachelor's Grove cemetery was recently listed in USA Today as #6 out of 10 great places to get spooked by your surroundings: http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/10great/2007-10-25-10-great_N.htm?POE=click-refer

John Fredette, John Carmen and I use to fish in the pond next to the cemetery on Holy Days when we were off from school at St. Christopher. Bachelor's Grove was even "spooky" in the daytime. One time we were walking around the graves and John Fredette, who was shorter than me at the time (I am 5’ 6” now), sunk up to his waist when he stepped on a grave. We all ran away and left him there in the "sink hole". He was really mad at us.

Other than the Larry Cebulski incident, those were really great times.

Wonderful reading all the memories from other former St. Chris students. After attending Br. Rice for a year my family moved to Lockport so I lost touch with most of the gang from St. Chris. I graduated from Lockport HS and attended several colleges here in the Midwest as well as two years in the army overseas. After college I became an English teacher and football coach. I started at Bolingbrook HS, moved on to Rich East, Mount Carmel, and finally Fenton HS near O Hare. I now live in Palos Heights and would love to see some of the old gang from St. Chris!

I found this web site after seeing news regarding "reunions" in the Daily Southtown! My years at St. Chris were great for me...many friends and lots of memories (most of which I forgot but I like to think I still relish)

I live in a "55+" adult community in Crest Hill..Carillon Lakes. Prior to that, I lived in Oak Forest while a student at St. Chris and again later for 24 years with my wife. I too remember Fr. Potter, Fr. Peter, Fr. Gale and Fr. Bruno. I played basketball as an 8th grader (I stunk) and I remember Fr. Peter running our of patience with me because I never played-up to my potential. Some buddies included "Doc" Dorsey, Fred Sanito, Pat Ryan (who we lost after graduation to cancer), Chester Banaczak, Dick House, Larry Williams, Charlie Lewis and Tony Kweder. I recall having my first lay teacher in 5th Grade... Miss Fish. 6th Grade was Sr. Danita; 7th Grade was Sr. Mary Alodia, and 8th Grade was Sr. Huberta..who fostered some of us into St. Vincent DePaul's Seminary in Lemont...before we all quit within a year of entering! I also recall spending 4th grade out in the mobiles and after battling & bruising the girls on the playground, they split the 4th grade into a "boys" and "girls" classroom. 1st Grade was Sr. Ricardo; the Principal was Sr. Patricia...I don't know what happened to me in 2nd and 3rd grade...maybe somebody can fill-in the blanks!!!

I spent 34 years in Tinley Park as a teacher and junior high administrator before retiring in 2001. I congratulate St. Chris on its years of service to kids and for the memories it provided. I'm looking forward to some kind of communication and reconnection if possible. Thank you!

Hi - It was a fluke that I found this site a few months back during a search on Midlothian. Kudos to those who are so organized! The whole St. Chris site is great; I found photos of family members & myself in the Fiesta archive gallery, too --- along with promo articles written, photos taken by friends for life, Bette & Fred Soth. This is the second time I've posted but for some reason didn't see the original attempt didn't make it on, so hello again folks!

I saw Joe Landeck and Mary Pavilon's fun & detailed posting and enjoyed! Joe's right about Fr Gale, he seemed to mean business though nice guy he was - I remember Fr Potter for heaven sake! Yes Fr. Bruno & then Fr. Peter in fatigues as he was a chaplain in Army NG I suppose. I recall being rather impressed when Fr Gale lifted a lanky Dennis Dykstra up high and out of the way of some fracas (had to be maybe 5th grade?)

I went on to Bremen after St. Chris but with father's location transfer w/Rheem, at mid sophmore year I ended up in Kalamazoo MI (think WMU?) - still live in rural area few miles west. I am only sibling left in the area rather due to another transfer. Brothers Miles & Dorian are in Arlington TX, Matt in Ft. Smith, AR, sister in VA. I worked locally in accounting (me!) for two medical firms but last ten yrs since our move west? (we are so spoiled around here) -- I've been involved in antique/home furnishing shop. Husband Richard recently retired; one son data dev mgr, another Lt Col USMC and daughter a commercial designer. No grands so far!

I certainly remember involvement and doings of the July Fiesta, hundreds of chrome crusted cycles, blessings with crowds watching, waiting tables Sunday afternoons for patient cycle riders -- certainly enjoying the carnival rides (also one guy with touchy tummy looking envious or annoyed? having to hold our loot as we girls rode the big yellow "Round-Up"). And Joe I sure remember the car raffle, I was standing there watching the fun. Wow!

I absolutely remember the winning basketball team! And the St. Pat's Day bazaar in midst of Lent! Yes to rollerskating Friday nights and then hey - the Sunday evening mixer's we could attend after graduation. There were some lightweight & fun dance contests; I did a couple w/Bill Holtgen (his sister Pat is married to pro coach Marty Shottenheimer - FYI ..) I missed all of that when I got up to MI, ended up with new ice skates for local park and city rink. There was constant snow and folks here were really into winter sports. (Think ski clubs. Nope, I skipped that.) I took to skating, determined maybe as I skated once before on a big "puddle" down in Midlothian when I was like, six. That was kitty-corner from that little mom/pop grocery in Bremen Heights. And I am amazed that that name came forward ! We lived within walking distance as we were on Kolmar #14444 when I was very young (Soths lived down the street) - then were back to area for 4th grade at St Chris, in Oak Forest then, via Harvey.

It was fun to read the postings. Like you I hope more get on there. About ten years ago I was flying through Chicago and was able to phone Lynn Roe after contacting her mom; said we'd meet next time I was making a connection but I can tell you it didn't happen. Det or Cin or Clev got in the way. You have an active alum group it seems and good for you all. I looked at photos from alum events but with no names listed I wasn't sure just who was there. Thought I recognized Susan Fisher in one? Remember, for many of you it's been since 8th grade that I laid eyes on you. Best to you all, Colleen

Colleen.....Yes, I believe Terrence O'Halloran is the correct name. I'm gonna have to dig out our class picture. Like you, I can't make anything out on the pix posted on this website....too small. Laurie O'Shea....So glad you're living your dream! You were my day nurse back in the mid-80's when I had day surgery at Ingalls. You were so kind to me, a true Florence Nightengale.

My "kids" are 31, 29, 25 and I have a 5-year old granddaughter and a 4 month old grandson. I am truly blessed. Life IS good!

Hi, Kay Hallahan! How did I get the name wrong? Did we have a classmate Terrence O'Halloran? I'm losing my memory after all these years. How nice to hear you're still smart and mature -- somehow I figured if anyone would be President of the U.S., it would be you! Hi, Kathleen McHugh Goldstein! What a wonderful, full life you've led.

Oh the memories from St. Chris. I too lived right down the block and went home everyday for lunch. Mass every morning - 6 days a week when school was in session. Sister Rosemary, 1st grade - the sweetest nun, loved children and beamed with all of the cute things we said as little kids. Does anyone remember having air raid drills and going out in the hall and putting our heads between our knees. And the sonic booms that regularly occured when I was in 5th and 6th grade. How about a TV brought in by a well to do family to watch a space capsule landing in the ocean??? Sr. Timothy was my 2nd or 3rd grade teacher - she took all of the left handers to one side of the room and taught us how to write cursive without wrenching our hand. We put our paper with the lines vertical and wrote up the paper. To this day I am complimented on my penmanship. Sister Gustave - my 6th grade teacher - cried when Pres. Kennedy died and we all knelt on the classroom floor and said the rosary. She loved my Dad. I always thought she had a crush on him. Sister Carmen - 7th grade, what a witch she was - making us memorize word for word those mimeograph science assignments. That was a tortuous assignment. And how about Sr. Corinne. Did anyone get by without her wrath. I also remember Sr. Jacinta - my brother Tom came home with black and blue marks on his upper arms from her pinching him. Boy was my dad mad about that.

Fiesta was a great time - remember the motorcycle blessing and all of the bikers would be down at Cottons Corner. And the Sunday lunches in the gym? My mom would make 5 lb. of potato salad and I would wait tables and make a lot of money in tips. We all hoped our families would win the new car from Jack O'Donnell Chev. The Friday night skating was probably my best memory. I was there every single Friday. I broke my arm when Mark Wilma tripped and a slew of kids fell on us. Mr. Tumpane wisked me up and called my parents. I also loved the Bazaar we would have every St. Joseph??? day. May it was St. Pat's day. Can't remember. Those Sunday afternoon movies were a hit also. And Father Gale - hell and brimstone every Sunday from the pulpit. He scared me. What an angry man he was. And Fr. Bruno was the sweetest, most mild-mannered man. Fr. Edwin was just plain crabby. I almost had heart failure if Fr. Gale was passing out report cards. My last rememberence of being at St. Chris School was sitting on the front door steps with my friends Pam Foster and Debbie Swider. The roof had recently been tarred and there was little chunks of tar all over. We wrote our names on the risers of the steps with the tar, they are there for many years.

After St. Chris I went to Bremen. I married quickly after HS and quickly divorced. My second marriage was my high school sweetheart and we have 3 kids - Craig - 36, Kevin-32, Amy 30. I went to nursing school in 1978 and graduated in 1982, have been at Ingalls Hospital in Harvey for 25 years. I have worked in Day Surgery for the last 17 years. I am residing in Dyer, IN living my dream. We have 5 acres and 3 horses. I always wanted a horse all of my life and have now have lived my dream for the last 22 years. Life is good and everyday is gift having healthy kids, grandkids (2 boys -14 & 7) and my health.

Loved reading Colleen Benedict and Kay Hallahan's news. I will tell everyone I see from St. Chris about the Alumni Assoc. Hope to hear more about our class.

Hello, Colleen Benedict! I'm here....in Midlothian! Although you cited "Catherine O'Halloran" in your posting, I know you must mean me cuz I AM very smart and I am most definitely mature at this age! hahahaha!!

Kathleen (McHugh) Goldstein Class of 1965 Posted: 6/25/2007
I have so enjoyed reading some of the news from you alumni. I was the second oldest girl in the McHugh clan and went to St. Chris from 1st though 8th grade. What memories I have!!! Yes, the Friday night roller skating, weekly movies in the cafeteria, and the Fiesta are memories that I will never forget. Sister Clarella and Sister Imogene were two of my favorite teachers. I too, got the talk to become a nun and was very close to going to school in Dubuque Iowa to do just that until somehow I ended up at Bremen and that was the end of that. I also remember working during the summers for Father Bruno (whom I adored). I was a great worker bee along with a few of my classmates, and we would scrub the hallway walls and bathrooms to get them ready for the fall. I even remember painting the St.Chris sign out in front! It didn't last very long as I don't think I did a great job scraping the old paint off before adding the new. I also remember that Fr. Bruno would have several of us fill out his Christmas cards and address them each year. How many of you remember when we went to school uniforms? We older kids hated it!!! They were red plaid with these gray jerkins over white blouses with Peter Pan collars. But the beanies we were required to wear on our heads each morning for mass really took the cake..... Not very fashionable!

Colleen Benedict, your posting really brought back the memories that I had almost forgotten...the nuns in the station wagon, the boy who got killed by the rake, the announcement President Kennedy was killed, they all came flooding back.

I loved St.Chris, and when I look back I am so thankful for the education that the nuns gave me. At my 25th high school reunion, I remember reuniting with several of my old classmates from the class of 1965. Kevin Connolly, John Walsh, Mike McMahon, Bill Balchunes and Francia Holtgen were a few that I remember talking to. Where are you all??? I ended up going to college down here in South Florida where I became a teacher and eventually an elementary school principal. After 33 years of service , my husband and I retired in Stuart Florida where we now live on Hutchenson Island in a condo overlooking the ocean. We fish, boat, and travel ...we are so blessed! My husband Dave (a former High School principal) and I have been married for 34 years and have a 29 year old son named Adam. Retirement for active people is great however, we still keep our hands in things by mentoring some of the newer principals in Broward County. If you are a classmate of mine, I would love to hear from you!!!

I read the last letter about Father Gale being a "hot head." That's for sure. When I was in 8th grade he'd come into our room and throw us boys around to keep us in line. My parents won two cars at the yearly carnival. In 1955 they won a Chevy Bel-Air and in 1960 they won a Chevy Impala. That was really something. Great memories. Keep them coming.

Colleen (Benedict) Newkirk Class of 1966 Posted: 4/25/2007
Oh, my! What fun to read other people's memories. We lived across the street from St. Chris at 14650 Keeler so I had an "up-close" view of church, school, rectory and convent. First, let me say I have so much respect for the nuns and the work they did back then. So many of them were talented and dedicated. And think about what we put them through! I took piano lessons from Sister Esther all through grade school so once a week I saw the "inside" of the convent -- very, very mysterious. I remember at school the nuns would pass the Mission bank every morning after we'd pay 2 cents for our milk so we could put in our pennies for the missions.

I remember Father Bruno fondly; he was a gentle fellow. Father Gale was a funny, hot-headed guy. He like to come across the street and have my dad make him a cocktail. I remember Father Gale passing out report cards (were they yellow in a gold yellow envelope?) He'd beat some of the boys after he looked at their grades. Looking back, some of those kids probably had some form of learning disability, whether dyslexia or ADHD. Need I comment further. . .

Remember how the nuns would pack into their station wagon to run their errands? The priests got a new Cadillac from time to time from Jack O'Donnell Chevrolet. Remember when they burned the old wooden church down? Was that in the late 1950s? The fire department came and did the honors. I still remember the sunny day with the flames shooting up. It was so dramatic! My dad salvaged one of the doors from the little old church, raised it on some 2x4 posts and built a dandy rabbit cage that lasted through plenty of pet bunnies and many years. Father Ted was the old Polish priest (Thaddeusz Woloszyk, or close to that, as I recall). I worked in the rectory in my early teens and he'd get letters from Poland. He was nearly blind so he'd have me read them to him, as best I could -- they were in Polish. Then he'd dictate his response in Polish. He was a charming, sweet man with great stories. I still know a few Polish phrases.

I remember when the interior schoolyard was all gravel and grass before they blacktopped it. The little library/gift shop in the middle of the schoolyard-- is it still there? (I haven't seen the school since about 1970.) When we were in school, the left half of the little building was the library and I loved it, became a lifelong reader there. The right half was the religious gift shop. What a collection of holy cards! They were in little boxes on the front counter and I'd flip through, looking for the gold-edged ones or particularly gorey (bloody saints) or pretty ones. In daily morning Mass I'd sort through my collection. There was occasional surreptitious holy card trading in the pews. Remember the announcement over the P.A. that President Kennedy had been killed?

I wish I remembered the names of more of my classmates. I've looked at the 1966 graduation photo, even with a magnifying glass, and can't make out names. I recall Catherine O'Halloran was the smartest, most mature person I'd ever met. Where are you, Catherine? I remember Tom Dorsey being really nice. I recall that in about the 4th or 5th grade Terry Kasziewicz (spelling?) died in September or October and the sister put a black cloth on his desk and his photo. It was traumatic -- the first death of anyone I knew. I vaguely recall the story being that he stepped on a rake and it flew up and hit him in the head. Sometime in the 8th grade, Rocky Cardillo reached over and kissed me, fast and clumsy, on the mouth. I didn't know what to think! We were so innocent then.

I cherish my childhood and school years at St. Chris. My parents, God love and bless them, wanted all 8 of the Benedict girls to get a Catholic education. My mom, Lois, was so active in Altar Rosary Society and other activities. My dad was such a great supporter of the church and school even though he wasn't Catholic. He'd be in the Italian sausage and beer booth at the Fiesta, sweating and laughing with the other men, flipping sausages, grilling peppers and onions!

I live in Thousand Oaks, CA. Catholic education all the way - Marquette U. nursing, University of San Diego Law. I'm happily married (2nd marriage) with a great, goofy 15 year old son. My best wishes to all classes but especially graduates of 1966. Colleen Benedict Newkirk

Grade school was such a long time ago, that I dont have too many memories. I do remember moving from a small Duplex house in Jeffery Manor to this house in Midlothian that was huge(by standards of the time) and we had 1 1/2 Bathrooms. Wow we had made it to the top. We lived 1 1/2 blocks away from St. Chris. Back then we could see the school from our house. There are many big trees and more homes now. No way can we see the school. I used to cut through my good friend Tom Gesswein's back yard on the way to school. Ide love to hear from him someday. I remember the cool Fiesta every year. And the raffel for the Car. For many years my mom would drag us every Sunday to a new church in the area to sell Chances on the car. We would do this every Sunday. I was so glad when the Fiesta came, and we didn't have to get up early on Sundays. I ended up going to Bremen HighSchool, then worked for a couple years, then to the Navy and VietNam, then College then work and then Bamm all of a sudden, I'm 61. I still live in the area, and see St. Chris from time to time when I visit my brother who now lives in our parents house.

I mentioned on my last newsletter that my dad graduated in 1924, but as I think about it I believe it was 1930. I had an uncle, Howard Landeck, who graduated a year or two before my dad. I also had a cousin, Jimmy Landeck, who graduated from St. Chris about 1950. Two or three years later he was hit by a drunk driver and killed. I remember between 5th and 6th grade one of our classmates, Larry Cebulski, was hit and killed by a train. That was around 1957. Does anyone remember that? That really had an impact on me because he was the first person I knew who died before his time. anybody out there remember that? Do I have the facts right?

Wow! 14 Hallahans went to St. Christopher! I'm very impressed. My brother, Robert, graduated in 1952, and my cousin, Tom Landeck in 1954, and my dad in,I believe, 1924. WOW! Any 1924 alumni still around? I taught in the public schools for 34 years before retiring. I now teach at Eastern Illinois University. I'm not the type that can sit around and do nothing, I like to keep on the go. Also I am not a computer person so you don't know how hard this is for me to do. Mary Jo-you didn't know what year we graduated? Come on now! Where are all you 1961 graduates? Get with it. I want to hear from you.

I have nine brothers and sisters, Donna, Kathy, Patty, Me, Terry, Ed,Tim,Mary and Mike.We lived at 14801 S. Kostner. Midlothian. I have many memories of St.Chris. Sister Bertha Marie, and her nun friends, actually would CLIME our apple tree, in their habits, and pick apples! They always made 2 extra pies for our family! Who remembers Father Edwin? He was mean. I hated it when he passed out the report cards. Father Gayle, would walk over and drink beer with my dad. I loved Father Bruno, what a warm hearted soul. The Feista, was something to look forward to, every year. What a blast that was. After St. Christopher, I attened Bremen only one year. We moved to Atlanta Ga. I missed my friends, more than I can say. After graduating from Peachtree High School, in Dunwoody Ga., I attended baking school. That didn't last long. I met my husband at a grocery store in the Atlanta area. We have been married 33 years. He mother said, it wouldn't last 2 weeks! Tim is a V.P. for the Kroger Company. I stayed home and raised 2 children, and 5 foster children. My two grandchildren, Haley 8 years old. and Parker 5 years old, are wonderful. They keep me young. Please, old friends, let me know what is new. Bettie McHugh Kelbel

My favorite memories at St. Christophers' are many. Roller skating in the gym, Sr. Clarella and Sr. Huberta, being an attendant with Barbara Keebler and Charlotte Provonacal for the Crowning of Mary, singing at Requiem Masses, and serving at dinners for the blessing of the motorcycles. I graduated from Tinley Park High School in 1965 and Southern Illinois University in 1970 with a Bachelor Degree in Education. I was married in 1970 and divorced in 1986. I have one daughter who is now 26 years old. I have taught grade school for the past 37 years of which 27 have been in Paxton, Illinois where I am currently a Reading Specialist. I also teach ESL classes in the evening for Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois. My best friend, Barbara Keebler, and I have remained friends throughout the years. We see each other on a regular basis and share our memories of good times at St. Christopher's. I have fond memories and am thankful for my Catholic education at St. Christiphers's.

Joe Landeck, I recognize your name. I also lived next door to Bill Calder. I graduated in 1963, but I recognized all the names you mentioned in your posting. Did you actually go into teaching? Sister Mary Selma and Sister Clarella both encouraged me to become a nun. After graduating, I actually went to a postulancy at St. Joseph's in Dubuque, Iowa. But when I went home for a visit during the summer, I saw Jimmie Connelly and realized that I liked boys too much to become a nun. So then I went to Bremen.

I would really like to hear from some of my classmates.I graduated in 1961. I remember Sister Huberta always getting on my case in the 8th grade. We had a great basketball team with Danny O'Conner, Jim Reymeier, Bill Calder and others. Father Gale would come in our room every Monday morning after we would win all our games over the weekend and yell and scream at us so we wouldn't get big heads. I think our record was 43-3. We had Miss Kelly in 7th grade and she was great! I think she inspired me to be a teacher. I remember getting "the talk" in 6th grade and all of us boys were psyched! I'm not sure which priest it was-maybe Father Norbet-but all he told us was not to look at dirty pictures. Yeah, right. Tell a bunch of 12 year old boys not to look at dirty pictures and what would be the first thing we would do? I remember getting slapped in the face by Mary Bowers in the 6th grade. I don't remember what I said to her. I loved being an alter boy. That way we got to do something at daily mass. Otherwise the nuns would come around during church and pull on our ears if we weren't perfectly behaved. Father Peter was the enforcer before Father Gale came along.I only remember getting whipped once by Father Peter, but with Father Gale it was like a weekly routine. I also remember getting polio shots. I think it was in 2nd grade. Boy did they hurt! Another thing that hurt was getting slapped on the palms with a ruler by the nuns. In 3rd grade-when we were learning our times tables-if we weren't able to give the answer to "What's 9 times 6?" immediately it was ruler time. The next time around I guarantee we knew the correct answer. I think kids nowadays need an occassional "ruler reminder." I'd love to hear from some of you in the class of 1961. It would really be great to have a '61 reunion. Joe Landeck

Pam Doyle, it was so very wonderful to hear from you! Nancy Ahlgrim Woestman and I reminisce often, and we always think about you! Wow! I have heard that Connecticut it beautiful! How many children and grandchildren do you have? I have a son and a daughter, and I have 3 grandsons! My dad has passed also, and my Mom still lives (alone)in the same house she raised 8 kids in! I lived our of state (Air Force) for several years, then settled in Oak Forest where I raised my kids, then moved to Beecher IL where I lived for 10 years, but after my husband died I returned to the area and now live in Midlothian. I came HOME. I have many many fond memories of St. Chris also........ESPECIALLY the rollerskating!

Pamela Doyle Class of 1963 Posted: 9/1/2006
I have fond memories of St. Chris and Midlothian--the roller skating in the gym, movies in the gym that my brother Richard, class of 61, coordinated and I ran the popcorn and candy counter during those winter months. At least 1/2 of the parking lot of today at St. Chris was actually grass and there were swings and slides. We had the annexes in the parking lot for many years of which I was assigned to for at least one year. The blocks around were still pretty undeveloped and our family, George, Catherine, Richard and myself always had plenty of kids to play with or local baseball/football games going on. My brother George, class of 57 played basketball and my sister, Catherine, class of 59 was on the cheerleading squad. The bingo, chaired for many years by my father George Sr., also an alum, and my mother's help, Pauline also an alum, with bingo and the fiesta which dad chaired for 25 years. Yes, the whole family was involved with St. Chris and the activities. We lived in a small town, played outside until the sun set in the summer without our parents wondering where we were because is was always safe. The motorcycles for the fiesta, baking cakes for the cake booth, mom doing the daily newletter during the fiesta, all of the family working the fiesta. I miss going to the nearby farm in the summer to pick strawberries, getting fresh vegs across from the now McDonalds, the parades, knowing everyone and everyone also looking out for each other, the fact that my neighborhood as a true neighborhood, everyone visited on those summer eveinings while the kids were playing "Red Rover" and watched out for each other with the winter storms can in. I now live in Connecticut and have been an easterner for 28 years, but you can't take the midwest out of me. Have a wonderful life here but always remember my roots and growing up with St. Chris and Midlothian. Dad has passed and mom now lives in Dayton, Ohio--there will be no more "going home" for me, but I carry the wonderful memories and the life our family shared. Where is June Cleaver when you need her?

I started 1st grade in 1952. In either 3rd or 4th grade (4th I think) it was decided to try an experiment and separate the boys into one class and the girls into another. We were in the portables and I remember hearing the nun yelling at the boys every time we were in the center hall. I don't think it was ever tried again and we heard that the boys' sister had a nervous breakdown and was sent away to "rest up". When I was in 5th grade I was in a split class with 6th graders. That was the 1956/57 school year. My 6th grade was taught by the first "lay teacher", Mrs. Fenwick. My 7th grade was a split class again with 7th and 8th grades taught by Sister Victoria. That was the 1958/59 school year. I graduated in 1960 with a class of really wonderful kids.

Was reading a post by Joe Landeck and was telling who the players were in the picture of the 1961 basketball team. The name Mark Miotti jumped out. His older brother Joe and I were friends. The Miotti's lived next door to us. Seems like there was an older sister, but I don't remember her name. Joe and I both won ducks at the fiesta?, I remember it called the carnival but maybe that was what my family called it. I think every kid on the block won a duck. You had to toss a nickle on a plate. Ronnie Wolf had seven I think. The Miottis had duck for thanksgiving. Mine and Joe's. I can remember Mrs. Miotti saying she never saw so many feathers in her life. It's funny how my mind got joged about the Miotti's. Blessings to all.

I was quite surprised to find this site. I started first grade at St. Christopher in September, 1951 and left while in the second grade when my dad was transfered to Oklahoma. Dad worked for Sinclair in Harvey. My memory is a little fuzzy but I think my first grade teacher was Sister Franswa (Sp?) and my second grade teacher was Sister Rose Marie. Seems like one of the priests was Fr. Potter? The only full name I can remember is Cathy Barber. She was the May Queen in the first grade and I was her escort. Pretty heady stuff for 6 years old. I remember a blond girl named Christine and there was a Judy and a boy named Paul whose girlfriend would drag him to the front of the line when we were dismissed for the day when in the first grade. She would always say that was their spot. There was also a boy named lawrence who always got into trouble. I guess the building we were in during first grade was turned into the convent. The street I lived on was Kostner Ave, but I don't remember the house number. People knew our house because of a large rock in the front yard. There was a older boy down the street named Ronny Wolf who was several years older than me and he had a younger brother named Joey. Can't remember much else except how much I hated having to leave and go to Oklahoma. I thought about my classmates quite often. Oh, there was also a Mary Burke who lived down the street on the corner. I can't remember if she was in my class or not and it seems that my mother kept in touch with her mother and that she became a nun. She had an older brother named Tommy who became a priest. Enough rambling as I must get back to work. If anyone remembers me or anyone I mentioned let me know at intrepidone45@yahoo.com.

The Class of 1959 will celebrate its Golden Anniversary in 2009 -- hard to believe it's almost 50 years since we graduated from St. Chris! I attended 1st Grade in Chicago, so missed having class in the old convent -- I went into the new school in September 1952 for 2nd Grade. I was in the portable annexes for 3rd and 4th Grades with Sr. Teresita and Sr. Rosina, then in the Music Room for 5th Grade when my whole class had Sr. Mary Ellen (the lay teacher for the dual grade room Mrs. Black became ill and her replacement Mrs. Bagby could not handle both grades). My 6th Grade class started out in the library building because the new addition was not ready -- Miss Kelly was the teacher -- her first teaching job! I had Sr. Alodia for 7th Grade and Sr. Victoria for 8th. Many happy memories for me of my days as a student at St. Chris. If any of my classmates would like to help plan some type of special reunion activity in 2009, please contact me (email RichmondK8@aol.com). I live in Oak Forest and am active on the Alumni Committee -- of course!

Just a note to say that I am coming to Chicago and Midlothian in June. I will be reading at the Bookstall in Winnetka, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 7. I will be down at Printers Row at 3:00 pm, on a panel called Sporting Lives. Sunday morning I am on the Rick Kogan Morning Paper radio program. Not sure of the time of his program. On Monday evening, the 9th, I’ll be at Midlothian Public Library at 7 pm for a reading of my novel The Caddie Who Played With Hickory which is set in Midlothian CC in the summer of 1946. John

Benadine:Thanks for the response. My brother was married in 1961. He and his wife had five children and now there are about 11 grandchildren. My brother died in 1985 from cancer. He lived in Herscher, near Kankakee, from about 1970 until the time of his death. You'e right, he was very athletic but he went to Joliet Catholic High School and due to the time spent commuting he had very little time for any thing else. He played semi-pro baseball and was scouted by the Reds, but I think he had a disagreement with our parents and wound up joining the navy where he met his wife. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks to Jack Keth for identifying my cousin Jim Landeck in the 1949 photo. I don,t remember much about Jim because I was only 5 when he was hit by a car and killed. My parents must have shielded me from the incident because I remember nothing at all about his death. Thanks again.

Hi Joe Landeck! Yes, I remember your brother Robert. He was a very polite, well-mannered, gentle boy, and was tall and thin with black hair. He usually was in the back row for pictures because he was so tall. See, my memory still works after all these years! Sorry to hear that he passed away. Was he married and did he have any children? Best Regards, Bernadine.

Although I graduated in 1961 I am going to post this in the 50's. This is for Bernadine (Biela) Alfano. I had a brother, Robert Landeck, who graduated from St. Christopher in 1952. I was just wondering if you remember him? He died of cancer in 1985. I hope to hear from anyone who remembers him. I also had two cousins who graduated from St. Christopher in the early 50's. Jimmy Landeck graduated in either 1950 or 1951, and his brother Tom who graduated, I believe, in 1954. Jimmy was hit and killed by a drunk driver in the early 50's. If anyone remembers them let me know.

My wife and I have been living in Colorado for the past 10 years. Recently, at my son's wedding back in Chicago, Jim Pignatiello told me about the Alumni Web page. So I thought I would check it out! It has been a wonderful experience and reading Justin's comments sure brought back some fond memories. I attended the 30 year class reunion at Hackney's in 1989 and was amazed at the number of classmates who attended. What a great class! It was great to reconnect with them all. And Sister Patricia, who looked wonderful, really helped to make the evening memorable.

I will always cherish the friendships that were made "back in the day" and those friendships that have endured through these many years. The 50th Reunion will definitely be worth the trip back to Chicago. Life is good...we have enjoyed many blessings from God. I hope that many more of the 59ers will share some information. It would be great to start catching up early! Best wishes to all for a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! Stan Banaszak

After reading the Alumni newsletter I learned of this website and have really enjoyed this trip down "memory lane". Some of the posters names were very familiar to me---Doyle, Gesswein, Foose and their sharing prompted me to say thank you. Pam Doyle's recollections of life in Midlothian in the fifties was particularly poignant as I was one of those neighborhood kids that played Red Rover in those warm, precious summer evenings. I recall how much I truly enjoyed St Chris---Sister Victoria, Mrs Fenwick, Fr Rupert---Boy Scouts and pick-up softball games on the many vacant lots in old Midlothian---and that first crush on the sweetheart of my dreams; wow I got a little teary-eyed just musing. I recall it all---the Fiesta, the Bingo nights, the rollerskating and even serving Solemn High Mass on Christmas Eve and Easter. Although I have had many wonderful moments since, the St Chris years will always stand out in my memory as among my very happiest. justin

PATRICIA, WHO WAS ALSO THE PRINCIPAL THEN. LOTS OF MEMORIES. WAS AT THE MORNING MASS WHEN OUR PASTOR, FR.PIONTKOWSKI HAD A FATAL HEART ATTACK. OUR WEDDING WAS ONE OF THE LAST AT THE OLD CHURCH (NOVEMBER,1960)

Tom Gesswein Class of 1959 Posted: 7/26/2005
My sister Judy & I were enrolled at St. Christopher's in 1951. At that time the old frame church was still in use and classes were held in both the convent and "the portables". I believe that constuction of the present school began while I was in 2nd grade. In 1984 I attended a 25th anniversary reunion dinner of my 8th grade class. In addition to old classmates, we were joined by Sister Patricia and 5th grade teacher "Killer" (Virginia) Kelly, one of whom brought a great old scrapbook full of vintage Fiesta photos and newspaper articles. I'm really looking forward to the 50th reunion in 2009. Having spent most of my adult life living and working in Chicago, I relocated to the extreme south of Texas (my wife's birthplace) five years ago; the only Blue county in a very Red state. Best wishes to all.

After reviewing my post, I find that my "Class of" is incorrect. (Note from webmaster: I corrected the year) 1958 was the year I graduated from Mendel Catholic High...so correcting my "account" is what I am doing now. Wonder if Bill Blakemore is still around?....

When I was in school, 3rd thru 6th grades were in the convent. Grades 7 and 8 were in converted Army barracks. When we were in the Army Barracks, the best-behaved students of the day each got to put a shovel of coal in the coal-burning stove. Our 8th grade field trip in June, 1952, was to walk over to what is now the gym, which was under construction then, and watch the construction workers pour the concrete foundation.

Hi, this is from Tom and Jack, class of 48 @ 49. Jack is up visiting in West Bend,WI from Mattoon, IL. Spent the time reminiscing about the good old days at St Chris. The portables w/pot bellied stoves, Bireleys beverages at recess, playing soccer during lunch and coming in all muddy, walking through the spring floodwaters (we lived on the east of the creek) to get to school, boy we loved to get wet or the challenge of riding our bikes through the floodwaters without getting wet. Terry Fox would walk with us but he went to the public school so he peeled off before Crawford, and of course boy scouts with Mr. Reagan.

I have been living in WI since 1962. Glad to be retired. Would love to hear from Rob or Ray Ritchie, Tom Burke, Tom Blakemore, Ruth Fetcho, Anita Flynn, Peggy Sch--- from Avers Ave., or anyone else from those years.

I definitely remember Sister Angelice (spelling). I was one of the guys who worked at Cavallini's in Midlothian. Anyone out there remember the resturant. The guys I stay somewhat in touch with are Jack Keth, Bob Vandewall, Terry Fox. Bob and Jack were from Midlothian. P.S. Hoping to hear from some of you out there. Tom Hogan

This is in answer to Joe Landeck's Feb 2008 note. Jim graduated in 49. He is second from the left, top row in our class pic. He and another 49 classmate, either Mary Catherine Hayes or Catherine Hayes were killed by a drunk driver just after getting off the TTHS school bus at 159th & Cicero. We were all good buddies in grade school but we all made new friends wen we went to TTHS. I think either the 49 or 50 class were the last to attend TTHS for 4 years before Bremen opened

Couldn't help but reading Don Konley's(46) exerpts in the alumni news. Everyone should remember Sister Emily and her Christmas readings. She was like having a grandma at the school. 4th grade ( Sister Augustine) and 5th grade ( Sister Viva) were in the portables with the pot bellied stoves stoked by Mr. Fetcho the school custodian. Sister Augustine liked to have Christmas plays during the season. Most of us boys caddied at one time or another at MCC. Learned how to play handball and of course "craps" (oops) during that stint. The Coynes lived across the street. Dorothy was my classmate. If you look at the 49 grad pic facing the picture I'm just to the left of Father Potter and Dorothy is just to the left of me.

Jack Keth Class of 1949 Posted: 12/26/2007

Just an introduction; I went to St Chris all 8 years then on to TTHS. All priests and nuns were Fransiscan at that time. Clergy started with Fr Clarence who died of a heart attack, was replaced by Fr Potter who was an army chaplain. Assistant was Fr Reinhard. Nuns; Sisters Scholistica, Emily, Viva, Angelise, Maureen( Principal) then Patricia (replacement principal) and sister Salome (Music).I can't remember the 4th grade nun but it will come to me.

The shrine was built while I was in school. Of course the school was the old brick building and there were 2 portables with pot bellied stoves. Have to run for now. Let me know if you need any more info from the 40's. Regards, Jack

Heard from Sister Pat. She read about the mass. hoping to find a way to St Christophers.

read the book "The caddie that knew Ben Hogan" Any of you guys that caddied at Midlothian CC have to read it. Alto its fiction it will bring bsck memories of when you were a kid. John Coyne made you think you were carrying the bag and brought up some of the holes I remember. The twelveth where we use to go diving for balls and get chased by security. the third where we use to skate on the pond there. Its a great book.

I'm curious, Is the John Coyne the same that lived on 147th across from the golf course in that great big house? If so there was a lot of Coynes!

Way back when, second grade was With third grade. Next year when that occured the ones in second were skipped and placed in third grade(Beverly Becker was one I know) So we had Sister Emily for two years. How many remember us begging her to tell us the story of the Early Christians? I listened to that story twice and never got bored. Fourth grade was in the portables and what is now the convent. The smart one went to the convent building. I almost made it!!! I think if I remember that 5th grade was also in a portable. A few of us from that class have reunions, not just 10 or 25 years but every once in a while. Its nice to see these classmate more then every five or ten years or so. Nuff rambling
